Each week, our summer school staff will focus on three different themes, or subject areas. Our goal in using this approach is to help students build their reading skills, vocabulary and interest in different subject matter. A secondary goal is to connect the students to the world and current events around them in an active way. The themes we have selected for this summer are:
July 12-15: Civil Rights: As Christians, we strive to extend the love and compassion of Christ to people of all backgrounds and experiences. During this week, students will focus on the events, personal stories and repercussions of the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. Older students will use this focus to find greater understanding for the variety of Civil Rights issues that are currently being addressed in our society.
July 19-22: Space Exploration: When it comes to outer space, scientists are reaching new frontiers and revisiting old ones with new technologies and perspectives. Students will explore what it takes to get to space, what we've learned about our vast galaxy so far, and what plans and projects exist to further our knowledge of what's out there.
July 25-29: American Traditions: Baseball and Music: The United States has a rich cultural history that is full of influential athletes and musicians. Since it's the summertime, we'll explore the origins and history of baseball, and hopefully get to attend a baseball game! Students will learn about elements of American music and which genres are specifically American, such as jazz, blues, and country music.
